Congratulations! An engagement is such an exciting time for a couple! These photos document your journey together and should be as unique and special as your love for one another.

I’ve created this guide to help you get the most out of your photos, and by the time you’ve read through this, you'll have all your questions answered and feel more than ready and prepared for your session.

I can’t wait to meet you in person and get you in front of my camera!

ENGAGEMENT SESSION

Preserve the sweetest moments

have fun!

Easier said than done - believe me, I know, I've been on that side of the camera too. The sound of the shutter might be a bit intimidating at first, and you might feel awkward for the first 5-10 minutes, but you will start phasing it out before you even know it. Try to see your shoot as a regular hang-out with your partner, be in the moment, lean onto each other, hug it out, have a laugh to release the pressure, and enjoy each other's presence.

things to bring (optional)

Pack a small pouch filled with the essentials to touch up your hair and makeup. Dry shampoo, a hair brush, powder, are a few great essentials.

It’s always a good idea to bring one more extra outfit just in case you want to switch things up or you decide to get in the water :) maybe keep some towels in the car too!

SKIP THE SPRAY TAN

Although it might seem counter-intuitive, I recommend that you do not get a spray tan before your session, even a few days prior, because it tends to photograph orange even when it’s applied subtly and by a professional. Your actual skin tone will photograph the most beautifully and naturally.

Hold a run-through with your makeup artist

This is the perfect opportunity to get to know your artist for the wedding day and hold a mini practice session. They will know exactly how to prep your skin and eyes for natural light photography. If you need recommendations for makeup artists, let me know and I’ll help you out!

If you’d like to do your own makeup, pay attention to your eyes. Your eyes will be the most important factor in many of your images. Keep in mind that it gets breezy on the beach and without the right hair products, humidity and wind can bring out the frizz, flyaways, and other unruliness.

Avoid busy patterns or stripes

Generally speaking, avoid patterns that will distract the eye, especially stripes, which are often unflattering in photos. That said, rules were made to be broken, so if you have a pattern in mind it could work out perfectly,
I just suggest carefully coordinating with your partner and making sure it won’t distract too much.

COORDINATING THE LOOKS

When it comes to dressing you and your fiancée, coordination is key! Pick a general color tone and level or formality and then both dress to that look, without matching exact colors. If you choose to have a color in common, make sure it is subtle serves as a thread running through the photos, not the first thing you’ll see when you look at the images. Most of our brides choose their dress first, and then put together their fiancé’s outfit based on that.

04

PICK YOUR COLORS

When choosing colors for your outfits, I recommend selecting lighter tones and more muted shades. By avoiding ultra-bright, bold colors, it will help bring all the attention to your faces and let the eye focus on the way you feel about each other. The camera loves shades of soft pink and muted blues, mixed with light neutrals like heather gray, creams, beige, leather brown and white. Softer color palette fits beautifully with the beach and ocean backdrop.

03

SAY YES TO THE DRESS

A long, flowy skirt or dress will allow the photos to document motion which is always a good thing. Cute, shorter-length dresses photograph beautifully as well (just keep in mind that it tends to be windy on the beach). Dresses and skirts tend to look most stunning on camera because they really flatter the female body. If planning a session on the beach - forget the shoes! Plan on being barefoot as shoes in the sand aren't really practical and look a little odd.

What vibe are you going for?

Are you going for a more natural, casual look or classic and elegant? Have you thought about wearing your "special" romantic gown, elegant dress or flower crown but just never had an occasion for it? This is your chance to do it! You can always do one casual look and then change into a more glam outfit. Don't be afraid to have some fun! Pick something you love, but also something you feel comfortable and confident in.
